An article on the huffingtonpost.com named the Academy of Art University NYFW Show the future of fashion. For the 21st time, the Academy of Art held its runway showcase from the School of Fashion. It was held at the Skylight Clarkson Square.
The Academy of Art University has been in San Francisco since 1929. They offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees for people who want to be design professionals.
The designers have very diverse backgrounds living everywhere from Maine to China. There were many impressive pieces on the runway and it was obvious the students put in hours of hard work to bring it to life. Audience members included fashion enthusiasts like Ms. J Alexander from America’s Next Top Model.
Ten recent graduates put together their best ensembles and showcased their individual spirit. The group released two menswear collections, five womenswear collections, and two collaborations within the seven collections. It was founded as a school for advertising art by Richard S. Stephens, a painter. It stayed in the family with his son and then his daughter becoming president respectively. The school is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. They offer programs for over twenty subjects and do have some distant learning students. Graduates have been hired by Nike, Apple, Zynga and more to help handle their art needs.
The Academy of Art University offers a no-barrier admissions policy that allows anyone to come in who has a passion for learning. They hold themselves to the highest ethical standards in art and teach their students the same. They are happy to give back to San Francisco and employ professionals to teach their students who are working creatives out in the design world and aware of the current trends.
Under president Elisa Stephens the number of attending students has grown to over eighteen thousand. Their alumni include well-known designers and Pulitzer prize winners.
The effect of Hurricane Harvey caused a historic amount of damage throughout Houston, Texas. Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to hit the state of Texas since 1970 during Hurricane Celia. The families who were displaced by the hurricane were in for a long haul and an unnerving process to pull their lives together. “This is not going to be a short term project for Texas,” said Texas Governor Wayne Abbot during a Good Morning America interview.
When the employees of Nabors Industries discovered the unimaginable devastation, they quickly went into action. They chose to act on behalf of their neighbors and members of the community. Nabors Industries has 1,200 employees located in Houston, Texas. The oil and drilling company has supported other projects in the past for the community, but the employees wanted to implement a project that would be more personal.
Nabor Industries CEO, Tony Petrello agreed.
Knowing that employees would need time off to implement their project for the community, Tony instructed the Nabor Industries payroll department to approve all time that was used for the project as paid time off. This gave employees the focus they needed rather than being concerned about their welfare since 10 percent of Nabors Industries employees were also affected by the hurricane. Tony also helped with donation efforts by establishing the Nabors Relief Fund and agreed to match all funds donated by employees which came to over $170,000.
Tony says that Nabors Industries is a part of the community, and when the community suffers that’s the time when charity and responsibility should be executed. Tony’s support of the community with donations and service is a major part of the leadership that he brings to Houston, Texas in addition to Nabors Industries. As a philanthropist, Tony’s founding of the Petrello Family Foundation gave many of those in the community a chance for higher education through scholarships totally $3 million to date.
In 2015, Tony was the highest paid CEO in the country with a compensation package totaling $27 million. His continued support of the Texas Children’s Hospital as a Board of Trustees member has helped in fundraising efforts and research for the hospital. Tony personally donated $7 million for the expansion of the renowned hospital that resulted in the Dan and Jan Duncan Research Institute.
Tony’s thoughtful and swift action on behalf of the employees is just another way that he shows a way to not only take leadership to another level but to also extend his compassion.
