Whitney Wolfe Included In TIME 100 List

Whitney Wolfe Herd has walked an admirable path in the past 4 years since her rocky departure from Tinder to building her $1 Billion USD social network company with the core values of tackling the inherent sexism on the internet and making it to 2018 TIME 100 list.

Original from Salt Lake City, Utah, Whitney Wolfe is an alum from Southern Methodist University located in Dallas, Texas. In 2012, Wolfe Herd co-founded Tinder as Marketing VP. 2 years later, Wolfe Herd left Tinder after reported growing tensions with the company’s executives, and subsequently filling a lawsuit against Tinder for sexual harassment.

The public pressure and online hate built her conviction to build what she thought was the solution. This solution materialized into Bumble, a social network and dating application where interest is expressed by both parties, but contacts are initiated by women. The idea behind the women initiated conversations is to empower good behavior while reducing unsolicited nude photos and other unpleasant approaches that are detrimental to the user’s dating experience.

Bumble has started two add ons to its app: Bumble BFF where users can find platonic friends, and Bumble Bizz as a career networking platform. Both apps follow the same philosophy of women initiated interactions as a push for gender equality.

The app has proven it’s success with an estimated valuation of over $1 Billion USD while keeping the founder’s values at the core of what they do. An example shared at SXSW by Wolfe Herd is the decision to ban all profile pictures with guns for which 5,000 moderators were contracted. Even though this measure sparks criticism, Wolfe Herd sustains that their values such as not promoting violence take precedence over the bottom line.

Wolfe Wolfe has been included in Time’s 100 list due to her success launching the platform, and the impact her vision is having in the #metoo era, where driving change towards a less hostile internet and fight misogynistic attitudes.
